Updates, Fire Safety Day, and Innovation Day

Mark your calendars if you'd like to join us at the Coppal House Farm Corn Maze in Lee on Monday, October 17th.  Plan on meeting us there at 9:10 if you like to come.  The price is $5.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.  Permission slips will go home next week.  Please pack your child a drink and snack that day.   Also, dress in layers that day, wear boots if needed, and please check the weather to dress appropriately.  We are just waiting to hear back from the bus company to confirm the date.

We have enjoyed using Mo Willems as our mentor author the past few weeks during our Readers' and Writers' Workshop.  They wrote Pigeon, Elephant and Piggie stories of their own and used Mo Willems' craft of writing.  Your child's stories will go home soon.

R.A.H. books did not go home on Thursday and Friday this past week due to changes in our schedule. Please look for them next week.  Occasionally, there will be a Scholastic News for your child to read to you.  Please only have your child read it to you if it is a 'just right' level for them. Otherwise, you should read it to your child, or partner read it with your child if it seems appropriate. You could complete the back together.  The Scholastic News will always be previewed and discussed in school before it is sent home.  It is a great way to build nonfiction reading into our school and home routines.

Thank you to the Stratham Fire Fighters for teaching us about fire safety, showing us the fire engine, and reading us a story.  Some of the important things we learned were having a family meeting spot outside your home somewhere that you practice together, replacing smoke detector batteries once a year, yelling for help if a fire fighter is coming to rescue you verse hiding under a bed or in a closet, and how to Stop, Drop, and Roll if our clothes catch on fire.  The fire fighters were friendly and very informative.  The students enjoyed the various activities Friday morning.

We enjoyed innovation day on Friday afternoon by building boats and seeing if we could make them float as part of celebrating Columbus Day!  If their boat didn't float, students were able to modify their boat to make it float.  Thank you for all the recycled donations!
