Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you for all the wonderful snack donations!  We ate well.  We even ate some things in the afternoon.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Your child made a special card for your family.  Please ask him/her about it on Thanksgiving.  They may decide to give it to you today.

Here are some pictures from our feast!

Family Turkey Projects

Monday, November 27th from 1:15-1:45 the Lobsters will be shopping at our school book fair.  If you would like to join us, please meet us in the library.  If you are sending your child with money to purchase books, please send it in a labeled baggie/envelope in your child's blue folder on 11/27.  Thank you!

Report cards went home today.  This will allow you to view the skills/behaviors we will be focusing on this year.  Please keep the report card at home and return the signed, empty envelope to school.

All short vowels have been taught.  We have done a few things to help us remember their sounds.
1.  We ate apples for Short A.
2.  We played with Fluff for sticky, icky Short I.
3.  We ate hard boiled eggs to help us with Short E.
4.  We sang opera to master Short O.
5.  We opened an umbrella to remember Short U.

Ask your child to sing you the Short Vowel Song and show you the signals for each one.

We finished My Father's Dragon.  This is the first of three books in the series.  Your child may want to check the other two books out of our school library and have you enjoy reading the book to him/her.

The Family Turkeys are so creative and are enjoyed by all who pass by in the hallway.  Enjoy looking at all the turkeys below!

Scholastic Book Fair, Music Hall, and Small Moment Stories

Thank you for attending our parent/teacher conference.  It was a pleasure meeting all of you and having the opportunity to get to know you and your child better!  Please never hesitate to contact me with any questions.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at SMS the week after Thanksgiving! This is a great opportunity to buy gifts for friends and family for the holidays. While we will have the opportunity to go shopping during that week during class, anyone is welcome to come at any time during our shopping hours, which are listed here:

11/27 - 8:30-4:00

11/28 - 8:30-4:00
11/29 - 8:30 - 6:30
11/30 - 8:30-4:00
12/1 - 8:30-11:00

We are looking for volunteers to help with:

  • Set up on Nov. 21 from 12:00-3:00
  • Cashiers and restocking shelves during the school day 8:30-12:00 and 11:45-3:10 time slots.
  • Packing up the fair on Dec. 1 from 11:00-2:30

If you can help at the fair please click here to sign up for a time. The profits we make from the fair go back into SMS classrooms and the library, so the money raised from your purchases will go directly back to supporting your children and their classmates. We hope to see you there. Thank you for all your support!

We will go on our field trip to the Portsmouth Music Hall tomorrow, November 14th.  Please have your child eat a hearty breakfast at home as we won't have time to eat snack that morning.

We completed our second writing unit called Small Moments and shared our stories with our classmates.  We were proud of all our hard work!

Ask your child why we ate these...

Reading Strategies

The photos below explain our reading strategies!  These cards will be helpful for you to use with your child when they are stuck on a word during reading.  Your child has learned them all and uses them well.  They may just need a few reminders such as... "Use your Eagle Eyes.",  "Try Skippy the Kangaroo.", "Stretchy the Snake may help you with this word.", "Try Chunky Monkey.", etc.  Have fun using them with your child.
